After an outage

What to do when service is restored

  • Gradually turn electrical appliances back on, including heating appliances (e.g., baseboard heaters).
  • Wait until the temperature and humidity have returned to normal before turning electronic devices back on (TVs, stereo, computers, microwave oven, etc.).
  • Adjust the time on your clocks, timers and thermostats.
  • Don’t walk through water to get to the distribution panel (circuit breaker panel).
  • Throw out any food that has spoiled from your fridge or freezer.
  • Check if you can file a claim with Hydro-Québec.
  • Restock your emergency kit.

If you had to leave your home or business

  • If you left your home or business at the request of emergency services, wait for Québec’s civil protection authorities to give the order to return or make sure it’s safe to go back.

If your electrical installation was damaged

  • Make sure to have it inspected by a master electrician.
  • If you see any sparks or broken or frayed wires inside your home, or if you notice an unusual smell or feel heat, turn off the power at the distribution panel (circuit breaker panel). Call a CMEQ-certified electrician (in French only) for advice if needed.
