Preparing for an outage or a planned service interruption

Planned service interruption: Tips to ensure your comfort

  • In winter, your home can become uncomfortable when the heating is off. Although most planned service interruptions generally don’t last long, it’s a good idea to preheat your home by turning up your thermostats by a few degrees about one hour before the service interruption is scheduled to begin.
  • Charge your electronic devices in advance so you can use them for work or entertainment during the service interruption.
  • Consider downloading movies, music or documents for work or school before the service interruption, as you won’t have Internet access.
  • To maintain the temperature of the refrigerator or freezer, plan your snacks so that you won’t have to open the fridge or freezer doors unnecessarily.
  • Track the status of the work on the Power outages map on our website or with our mobile app.

Prepare an emergency kit!

In the case of a power outage, it’s a good idea to have a kit that contains things like a flashlight, batteries and first-aid supplies. Store it in an easily accessible location and make sure that everyone in your home knows where it is!

  • Battery-operated flashlight to avoid using candles
  • Spare batteries for your flashlight and other devices
  • Games, books or other pastimes to keep busy
  • Battery-operated radio or a portable charger for mobile devices so you can monitor the situation from the map on the Power outages map on our website or with our mobile app.
  • Non‑perishable food to avoid opening the refrigerator
  • First‑aid supplies
  • Supplies for people with special needs, if necessary
  • Blankets to stay warm
  • List of important phone numbers (home and businesses)

Power outage: Tips on managing the situation

  • In advance, draw up a list of emergency numbers, including Hydro‑Québec 1 800 790‑2424.
  • Put together an emergency kit and keep it easily accessible. Check the contents regularly to make sure everything is there and in working order.
  • Have a backup power supply or a temporary place to stay lined up for anyone who relies on a life‑support device.
  • Stay up to date on the latest developments on the Power outages map or on our mobile app. If the outage is not identified on the Power outages map, report it online or call 1 800 790‑2424.
